San Francisco Writer's Group (Forming?)

I am considering either forming or joing an already established fiction writing group here in San Francisco. I have been searching CL and Googling writing groups and classes and find there to be a real shortage of peer groups...I wonder why?

The idea (inchoate as all my ideas) is to find a small group...5-10 people...who are willing to meet/read/provide feedback either at various coffee shops around the city or people's homes if they are willing to host etc. I would love it if we could have a some experienced writers of fiction to join. I am a published journalist with a load of unfinished fiction that I would like to (need to) expand and develop into short stories and hopefully, eventually a novel or three.

I am very open to thoughts and ideas about how all this should work and I would like some balance as to the gender, ethnic and racial composition of the group.

Before I start rambling (or have I already begun?)...

hey, I'd be down for that, either in SF or East Bay, or combo. I've done a bunch of fiction workshops and classes, found some very helpful, others less so. I like your idea of a group that's not so formal, but committed and ongoing.

I'm a book editor who would like to spend more time writing fiction. I've got a half-finished long thing I need motivation to work on, and would like to start some other stuff. I might be able to scare up someone else to take part in a writing group if something coalesces--or if you find something existing.

    Keep me in mind...
