Screenwriting, etc

topic posted Fri, May 18, 2007 - 1:13 PM by  Pumpkin Queen
I have no idea how the screenwriting world functions or script writing or treatments or how any of it works, but at the end of this month my cousin, who's trying to get started in this business, is going to see what he can do here in California. Any ideas of where to go and how to get started? He went to film school and has done extensive writing for radio, and treatments, etc where he's from. But now he's trying to see if he can turn in that iron ring for a gold one.

Any suggestions on where to get started or how I might be able to help him?

Hoo boy, join the club! :D

I'm (attempting) putting a novel into a screenplay format, and it helped me to look at free online movie transcripts, to see how they're written out versus how novels are written.

Your friend should think about dialogue and blocking even more than usual. Keep asking, "What's this gonna look like on a big screen?" rather than "How does this piece of writing look/sound?"

    Good(hic)luck!

Each time a character speaks you offer some insight into what the emotion and tone is whom they are addressing etc.

When a Character does a thing you do the same.

The idea is to allow an actor or director to understand you vision of the character and his actions.
