so I've decided, just for fun, to write a murder mystery that takes place in SF. but I don't know how a murder investigation actually takes place. Is there any sort of online (or print) information about how the police investigate murders? All those other mystery writers must get their facts someplace. Any suggestions?

Writing something nonfiction - especially if you happen to write something that readers might want to take account into - will really require research and information. Ask around and make certain your resources are reliable. Quote if you can. Write about stuff that has credibility and mention big names such as agencies and public officials.

you are going to have to learn a lot.

Things have changed from the days of Dirty Harry. However you can skip all the gee whiz forensics crap and just go straight to the old tried and true Dirty Harry format. It doesn't get old.
